Guideline for Universities on Inclusive Interaction with All Genders – A Guide for Employees

Students and employees of all genders should have the same chances to participate in the acquisition and production of knowledge at universities—at least ideally.

Trans and non-binary people—people, whose gender does not align with the one they were assigned at birth—encounter various obstacles in their everyday lives that make this harder for them.

Most people at universities wish for an appreciative treatment of one another. After all, we share the same goal: to acquire and produce knowledge.

There is often little knowledge surrounding trans and non-binary identities. Many people don’t know how they should interact with trans or non-binary people. In addition, regulations, rooms and institutions of universities often exclude trans and non-binary people.

Our manual for universities about the inclusive treatment of all genders is intended to help employees at universities create suitable structures and resources to make the university a place where trans and non-binary people can pursue their work and learning equitably and without obstacles

Download the complete manual as a PDF (currently only in German).

The manual considers the following five topics:

  • inclusive language
  • structures of learning free from discrimination
  • creation of gender neutral toilets in addition to gender-segregated facilities
  • self-directed and easy-access change of name and gender marker
  • effective institutions to treat concrete cases of discrimination quickly and professionally
